Creating an Atlantic Ocean Community by Implementing the Galway and Belém Statements
LANG:
Namibia

Namibia started the national Blue Schools Network in 2021. Initially, it was open to schools in the two coastal regions of Namibia, namely: Erongo and //Karas Regions. In the Erongo region, the Network will cover towns like Hentiesbay (the head office of BlueGrowth Namibia), Swakopmund and Walvisbay while in the //Karas region, the Network will cover towns like Luderitz and Oranjemund. The only non-coastal school involved in the Network in the initial stages is the Hage Geingob Highs School in the Capital City, Windhoek, which already has a functional Blue Economy School Club. Currently, the Namibian Chapter of the Network is entertaining the notice by the Kelp Blue School in Luderitz (//Karas Region) and the Kamwandi Combined School in Hentiesbay (Erongo Region).

In so far as the provision of knowledge, skills and attitudes in the ocean space is concerned, the Network will cover the vital space between the efforts of the University of Namibia and the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources as well as the Benguela Current Commission in order to bring the much-needed ocean awareness and ocean literacy in the selected Namibian schools to stand Namibia in good stead in respect of its international, regional and national policy commitments on:

  1. The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 14 and other complementary Goals
  2. The Commonwealth Blue Charter
  3. The African Union (AU) Agenda 2063 Blue Economy Strategy
  4. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Blue Economy Strategy,
  5. Namibia’s own aspirations under its Sustainable Blue Economy Policy Framework and Namibia’s 2018 International Sustainable Blue Economy Nairobi Conference Pledge and, of course
  6. The Belem and Galway Statements
